Ford substantially revised the Focus for 2015, but the 2015 Mazda3 still has it beat in a lot of ways.
The base 2.0-liter I4 in the Mazda3 has 5 fewer horsepower than the Ford's 2.0-liter inline-four, but it reaches peak power 500 rpm lower - making all that power more usable in the Mazda3. According to EPA estimates, giving up those five horses in the Mazda3 gets you an extra 3 miles-per-gallon in both the city and highway. With the Mazda3's larger 2.5-liter four-cylinder, which offers 184 horsepower, and the optional i-ELOOP regenerative braking feature, you can get 29 mpg city and 40 mpg highway. This great fuel economy is all thanks to Mazda's new SKYACTIV®® Technology which includes integrated upgrades to the chassis, motor, and transmission system. The fun to drive Mazda DNA is baked right into the Mazda3 too, so you know that you'll enjoy every extra mile you get.
The Ford Focus and the Mazda3 hatchback are nearly the same in every external dimension. And yet, if you compare the interior measurements, the Mazda3 wins again. The Focus has less than a ½ inch more rear headroom, but the Mazda3 has more space everywhere else. Compact cars are always hurting for rear leg room, but the Mazda3 beats the Focus by more than 2 ½ inches in this area. The Mazda3 does have slightly less cargo room behind the rear seats, but fold them down, and the Mazda3 beats the Ford again thanks to its efficient interior design.
It seems nobody told the people at Mazda that the Mazda3 was an economy car. The interior features a knob and touchscreen interface that functions better and looks better than those in even German luxury cars. Ford continues to improve its Sync and MyTouch systems, and the latest generation are available on the Focus. Mazda, however, got it right the first time with their infotainment system, which is included as standard on all Mazda3 hatchbacks. The controls in the Mazda3 are more intuitive, everything is in easy reach, and the overall impression is more like a near-luxury model than a compact.
